So You Want To Be An Amateur MMA Fighter

MMA

***This is an informational post only, we are not matchmakers, promoters, or event holders. Please follow all links that appear in the post. Parts of this post will seem a little comical, but that is not the way we see the sport, we take amateur MMA very seriously as everyone should.

With all the attention MMA is receiving in New York lately, people are coming out of the woodwork wanting to know what it takes to get on a Cage Wars card or how to fight in other amateur MMA events in the area. Well as the header shows we are not the people to seek for that information, but we can lead you in the right direction.

First, we would like to say if you have not trained to become an MMA fighter we suggest you start there. We do know that if you aren’t trained you will not be taken seriously and let’s face it who wants to step into the cage with someone that has trained their whole life and has been waiting to make their amateur debut, I know I wouldn’t.

So that brings us to the second step (if you have trained to become an MMA fighter skip this portion). Find a reputable school or instructors in your area, we have a featured gym section and that is a good place to start. Another step in the right direction is to contact some of the fighters we feature on the site. These fighters are a great bunch and are willing to lend information, soon you will find out your MMA family is a large part of your life and are always by your side. *Just a side note if you finished UFC on the Xbox 360 with an achievement score of 1000 that does not make you a fighter and should not be used as an instruction course, it’s a game dammit.

Next (we will skip the numbers), be in shape, just because you trained “back in the day” does not mean you are ready to step into the amateur MMA cage, once again fighters that step into the cage and are hungry for a win and have trained hard for this fight and are in great shape. Another example is, “I remember him from High School and I used to take his lunch money, I can take him the cage”. My response to that is good luck and if that amateur MMA fighter ever got you in the cage, we wish you the best and not because MMA is about retribution or payback, but that fighter is in shape and once again has trained hard to be in the cage.

Now don’t take this the wrong way as I swear I am not crazy. While no one is looking punch yourself as hard as you can in the face. Did you do it yet? Well if you didn’t do it because you don’t like getting hit in the face your amateur MMA career is over, why you ask? Let’s face it you will take a couple of shots to the face during the course of the first round (prior to being knocked out). Now if you are one of those that a punch in the face really didn’t effect you bravo, but now explain to your family and friends why you have a black eye, because some crazy guy at Warriors Instinct MMA said to try it if I wanted to be an amateur MMA fighter really isn’t a good answer.

Here is a tough part. You have to make weight for weigh-ins prior to your fight, but it really isn’t that bad as you are a week out and have to cut 10lbs. A week seems like a long time, but with training, work and life, cutting that weight may be difficult and remember you still be able to function on a daily basis, let alone keep your stamina up for possibly 3 of the toughest rounds of amateur MMA action you will every face.

If I am such an authority why don’t I step into the cage? Well let me tell you, common sense does prevail and I know these amateur will eat me alive. I know I will never be able to step into the cage and I accept that and that is why I do what I do and that is to write about amateur MMA in our area. So remember just because you have a passion for the sport does not mean you have to be a fighter. You can head to a Cage Wars event and cheer for the best amateur MMA fighters in our area, while they battle it out in the cage and you will not have to explain to your boss the next day why you have a black eye and don’t try to play it off that you take part in a fight club, because if you tell your boss that you forgot rule #1 of fight club.

So in a nutshell if you are interested in fighting in one of the premiere events in the country please use the links below to contact Cage Wars. Their website has a contact page and I would suggest using that as one of the Cages War staff will hit you up. Do remember though, they will match you against a worthy opponent and soon you will be on your way to starting your amateur MMA career.

Cage Wars Website
Cage Wars Facebook

If you are looking to begin training like we said earlier we suggest you use the Featured Gym Section that appears on our side bar as well as the Features Fighter Section, for more fighters please checkout our follow local fighters section in the top menu, as we have their Facebook and Twitter (if they have a Twitter page) Pages listed for you to see.

Once again even though this post seems comical in areas, please do not take this sport that way. We respect all that are involved in amateur MMA and we are bringing to light this is not for everyone and takes a lot of time and commitment to become an amateur MMA fighter.

Legalizing MMA In New York Gets Closer By The Day

Legalize MMA in NY

New Yorker’s are used to seeing the above image when it comes to their favorite sport. For a long time now legislators have felt that MMA had no place in New York State, but all that may be changing. As we know a lot of amateur MMA promoters have been holding events in areas of New York as a loophole in New York State’s law allows them to hold these events and we know Cage Wars was and is until this day knocking on the Capitals doorstep letting them know amateur MMA is not going anywhere and continues to grow in popularity by the day. That popularity is not just coming from fans as we have witnessed a lot of new amateur fighters stepping up as well as fight team and schools, and we feel this has prompted New York Legislators wanting to look at legalizing MMA in New York State as there are 64 sponsors backing the bill.

We have been following developments concerning legalizing MMA in New York and last night Master MMA instructor Ron McEvilly appeared briefly on Fox 23 News and spoke about what he is passionate about, as well as Assembly member Steve McLaughlin letting the public know what NY is losing out on because of MMA being illegal in NY.

For more information please check out the sources below as well as checking out the Fox 23 News footage from last night broadcast on Tigon Academy’s YouTube Channel.

Shane Bower Up And Coming Amateur MMA Fighter

Shane Bower

Shane Bower

We have a treat for the local Hudson crowd as a lot of people may already know Shane Bower, and hopefully you met him in a good way and wasn’t pulling you over or even arresting you as Shane Bower is better know to a lot of people in the area as Hudson Police Officer Shane Bower. We have know Officer Bower for many years at Warriors Instinct MMA and what can I say about him. If you know him you will know that he is a great guy, a father, a United States Marine that served his country and trains with big Mike “Miller Time” Miller and Team MoFo (stay tuned for more information about Team MoFo).  Shane has a busy schedule but that does not stop him from training, he credits Guillermo for getting him ready to fight as well as Ngounga Badilla, and of course Mike Miller.

Age:40
Height:5’11″
Weight:195
Association: Albany Submission
Disciplines: Ground and Pound
Wins: 0
Loses: 0

Next scheduled fight: June 15

What do you do to prepare for an upcoming fight: Half marathons and rolling at Albany submission

What would you say your biggest strengths are: My cardio and stamina

What do you feel you need to work on the most: Need to work on everything you can never have enough tools in your tool box

Don’t let Shane’s record discourage you from following him as his amateur MMA record may not have any wins as of yet, but his occasional street fight back in the day has wins in that column.

So there we have Shane Bower in a short bio. There is a lot more that makes this father, fighter, runner, tattoo artist, Marine and Hudson Police Officer tic and if you know Shane you know that already. One thing we don’t suggest is if you want to meet Shane, don’t do it the wrong way and end up in the back of his patrol car. One way to keep up with Shane (and keep you out of trouble) is follow him on Facebook and see for yourself what Shane is all about.

Inspiration Found On Facebook From Fighters

Cage Wars 18 Jahloni Kum vs Jacob Montalvo (1)

We all get inspired by different things, some it maybe listening to Mozart, others the art of Vincent van Gogh, maybe even a favorite teacher or coach have inspired you to do better, but have you ever looked past some of the drama some people post on Facebook to see what some of the MMA Fighters in our area write? If you do kudos to you, but if you haven’t we are going to add just a couple of quotes found on Facebook from some of our family in the past 24 hours.

Jahloni “Bruce Leroy” Kum

A lot of people ask me what it’s like to fight in the cage, I figure I’d answer everybody’s question in one shot imagine a rocky movie, a real life Cinderella man story being lived out by you.. You’re in the locker room, every thought in the world is running through your head if it’s your first fight, you’re waiting for your moment as the time starts to wind down your hands get taped up the gloves go on and you start getting warmed up, you hear the crowd cheering above you, you know you’re the next one up your heart starts pumping as you go up to the main stage you see the fans in attendance, the lights then you hear your music.. you take that walk down to the cage and then you realize, THIS is reason you’ve trained for you’re checked for what you need to have before you go into battle, then you walk up those stairs the announcer calls out both of your names for everyone to hear, the cage doors shut behind you.. you see your opponent standing across from you then every doubt, every fear, every stress, worry goes out the window the referee brings you in tells you what’s expected nothing more, nothing less then you’re back to your corners.. you hear the following “fighter are you ready?” “Fight!” and in your mind you already have the answer..so what you feel next is surprising.. freedom.

Will Barry

Certain things in life are similar to band aids; they served their purpose, no longer serve us but know its gonna sting taking it off.

At the end of the day though you just have to rip it off and get it over with.

Rob Beast

Day 10 of self-rehab. Back to recovery. It’s amazing to think that 10 days ago it was hard to walk and talk, to being back in the gym. Next week preparing for my fight in Binghamton on April 26th. Still have 3 weeks of recovery. Thank you to everyone who followed my progress. The Beast is back. And big news about my personal training classes coming soon. Good luck to all my guys competing Friday in Utica. I’ll be there to support so stop by and have a good time.

Mid February I was about 165. Using the diet I created I am now down to 147. 135 is getting closer and closer. I also should mention all of my lifts have gone up significantly (thanks Matt phelps). 135 here I come!

To Cage Wars and the Cage Wars KO Girls holding an event for a worthy cause.

Now we could go on and on with new gyms coming together, new fight teams forming, but we would be here all day so what is my point already?! Glad you asked. If this sport is so bad that New York State and its law makers feel it is so terrible and harmful to our state, would these words be coming out of the fighters, trainers, gyms, promoters, match makers and events, mouths in our area? All I ask is to take a look for yourself, make a new friend and find some of the inspiration that comes via Facebook from our MMA family in our area.

We reached out to the fighter that held Cage Wars Super Heavy Weight Title and he had no comment and did not want to be named in our post.

Cage War Super Heavy Weight Title Vacated

Premiere Amateur MMA Event In Our Area (Opinion Piece)

MMA

**This is an opinion article and it contains my opinion and my opinion only. In writing this article I mean no disrespect to anyone person(s) or events in anyway.**

My Team and I have gone to many fights in our area. We have showed up as press (and we were granted press passes to the event so we could cover the event) to some and we were just spectators at other events. Now we do not come from a MMA background beside being huge fans, not to say I myself do not have training in certain areas such as boxing, wrestling and Tae Kwon Do (blue belt), but that does not make me an expert nor a fighter as I never have stepped into the cage, but in my previous job fighting was one thing you had to depend on to defend yourself and others. So what makes me an expert into what I am about to say? Well nothing as this is my opinion.

I will first start out by saying our favorite MMA event we love by far love to attend is Cage Wars. So what separates Cage Wars from other events we have attended? Was it the press passes granted to us, was it the pay (we do not get paid to run this website nor do we collect a pay check from any event we cover)? It is neither, in fact it is the professionalism the staff at Cage Wars provides not only to us, but its fighters, trainers and everyone involved. Like I said we have gone to events we have paid for our tickets to go to, and I feel whole heartily nobody can compare with Cage Wars. I know by now you are saying to yourself my opinion must be influenced by something else as Cage Wars appears all over our website and no one else does. This is a true fact Cage Wars does appear on our website a lot and that is because besides them and one other event that is all we have been allowed to cover. Some events in our area may not have taken us seriously or maybe just thought we were looking to get into fights for free. What ever you may be thinking please take that from your mind, as we are here to shed light on MMA in New York State and just because you may hold fights in your area did you hold fights on the Capitals door step? Did you ever think to step back and think that Cage Wars opened this door for other events and allowed them to have events in our area? Probably not.

OK so I spilled the beans and let you know in the second paragraph that Cage Wars is our favorite event we have attended, and like I said this is not influenced because our Team has been granted press passes for Cage Wars 17 and 18 to include weigh-ins, because to be honest even though we receive press passes we work up to 30-40 hours after the event to get our coverage up in a timely fashion and mind you running a website that’s traffic rises everyday costs money. So why do we do it if it takes that much time out of our everyday lives to get our coverage up and pay the increasing size of our servers? We do it for the fighters, fans and all the others involved in MMA in New York State, to spread the word, which MMA fights are not “barbaric” and should be legalized in NYS. So what the hell does that have to do with Cage Wars? Well everything, Cage Wars was built on the bigger picture that no one else dared to do and that was bring amateur MMA fights to New York all the while maintaining a higher standard, and let’s face it no one can say that they are trying to cash in on MMA in our area, because like us Cage Wars must have had to invest money of their own (we have not invested the amount of money they must have to get them off the ground) and a lot of time including sweat and tears along the way.

If you have every attended a Cage Wars event or any of the other events in our area I know by know you may be thinking I am right, others maybe thinking this dude has taken one too many much need punches upside the head. Maybe I have, but once again these are my opinions. But let’s think about it if you attended or even heard about Cage Wars 18, which was one card that was stacked to the hilt, no holds barred just unadulterated MMA action. They had some of best amateur fighters in our area compete in well matched fights. Some of those fights could have gone either way just looking at the card. They didn’t give the fans a fight with a fighter with a 0-2 record against a 7-0 fighter, these fighters came into Cage Wars 18, well trained and ready to do what they have been trained to do and that is taking all of their disciplines and fight it out with a well matched opponent. I know some people may still be grumbling over one or two of the fights that took place that night, but did you ever take into consideration it is passion, love and respect for MMA that drives them. When was the last time you seen another athlete give their opponent a hug prior to competing, none the less trading leather to the face and shaking their hand when it was over? You don’t. We pay attention to a lot of the details that have gone into these events and the fighters fighting in said events. If you follow any one of these fighters out of the majority you will hear or read that the fighter that were competing against one the night before, now are talking about helping the other with their weakness or are letting the fans know the deep admiration and respect for their opponent. Now I know a lot of that type of thing falls back to the fighters training, their camps and teachers, but Cage Wars brings what we like to call the “Elite Amateur MMA Fighter” to the crowd for all to see. Now after saying that, if you are a local amateur MMA fighter and you have not fought in a Cage Wars fight, that does not mean you are not an elite fighter, I used that as an example of what I like to feel is the way Cage Wars should be looked upon when matching fights and as a whole.

Now before the hate mail starts, take into consideration these are my opinions and mine only. If you would like to discuss further anything I have brought forward, feel free to contact me via our contact page. This article was not intended to get anyone riled up, just to bring forth my opinion of something I believe in. I have the utmost respect for the amateur fighters and trainers as well as event promoters in our area, but if you haven’t checked out Cage Wars I suggest you do.

Interview With Jahlon Kum

Cage-Wars-18-Jahloni-Kum-vs-Jacob-Montalvo-2

Jahlonin Kum took some time out of his busy schedule to add a brief bio about himself and become one of Warriors Instinct MMA’s featured fighters.

Age: 18
Height:5’10”
Weight: (Walk around)155-160lbs (fighting)145lbs
Association: Tigon MMA
Discipline: Mixed Martial Arts
Wins: 3 MMA- 1 Kickboxing (all Cage Wars)
Losses: 1 MMA

I started competing and had my first fight at 17 years old at Cage Wars 11 which was a kickboxing match vs Elliot Brassard. What struck your interest in wanting to fight: That’s actually a very good question, one of the driving reasons that got me into fighting is because I felt that I needed something more in my life, the everyday usual just wasn’t cutting it for me, I wanted to do and try my hand at something that very few people would step up to the plate and do, I would watch old videos of UFC and PRIDE fights and I would sit there and think “Man I wish I could do that, that seems so awesome!” Eventually I just got tired of wishing and decided to make it happen, the training and the culture just clicked with me as well as having an awesome team I just decided to take it and run with it. did some local BJJ tournaments and a NAGA tournament and after my first official MMA fight I was hooked; I am currently with Tigon Academy excellent school with a solid group of guys and girls, I honestly consider them a second family; when I’m not training or have some down time I’m usually just hanging out with my friends, I like to travel, I’m a HUGE gamer, so I’m usually on my Xbox, or I’m at my job with the center for disability services.

Next scheduled fight: April 20th

What I do to prepare for a fight I believe that in fighting and any combat sport as well as conditioning your physical body for competition you have to be mentally there as well I see it as human chess you always want to think at least five steps ahead of your opponent so as well as getting my cardio, striking, grappling, strength, footwork, etc. in. I study as much as I can about every aspect of not only my opponent’s game but my game as well in my opinion that’s how make yourself a stronger and more versatile fighter and martial artist

What would you say your biggest strengths are and what is the one thing you need to work on the most:

As of right now I would have to say my biggest strength that I have is being adaptive going in there and having a game plan but being able to think on the fly and assess an opponent actively I’d say the one thing I’d probably have to work on are letting loose and letting some kicks fly a little more, they’re definitely getting there though!

Summing it all up where do you see yourself in your MMA career five years down the line:

Five years down the line I can definitely see myself on the professional side of this sport, I’m here and ready to go! It’s something I love to do and I believe that when you’re doing something that you have a true passion for, it’s never considered work.
